The northern part of the map area and large adjacent regions have been severely shaken by one or more moderate to large prehistoric earthquakes. The evidence of these takes the form of paleoliquefaction features, including shaking-induced sandblows and dikes that fed them. Over several summer field seasons from 1990 through 1994, several workers searched ditches and river banks for evidence of earthquake induced liquefaction. They found numerous banks with shaking-induced sandblows and the dikes that fed them. This database shows where they searched. The northern part of the map area and large adjacent regions have been severely shaken by one or more moderate to large prehistoric earthquakes. The evidence of these takes the form of paleoliquefaction features, including shaking-induced dikes and sandblows that feed them. The most widespread paleoliquefaction is attributed to a mid-Holocene earthquake near what is now Vicennes, IN, with an estimated moment- magnitude of about 7.5. Stratigraphic, geomorphological, pedological, archealogical, and geochronologic evidence indicates that probably some of the paleoliquefaction was caused by several additional, smaller earthquakes during the Holocene and late Pleistocene. Purpose: The data was generated to help in understanding the seismotectonic hazards in the vicinity of the lower Wabash Valley. This data complements similar data collected in the vicinity of New Madrid, MO US Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-0574, available at http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0574/ Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Range_of_Dates/Times: Beginning_Date: 1990 Ending_Date: 1994 Currentness_Reference: publication date Status: Progress: complete Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: none planned Spatial_Domain: Bounding_Coordinates: West_Bounding_Coordinate: -91 East_Bounding_Coordinate: -86.99996185 North_Bounding_Coordinate: 42 South_Bounding_Coordinate: 37 Keywords: Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: USGS Thesaurus Theme_Keyword: paleoseismology Theme_Keyword: liquefaction Theme_Keyword: earthquakes Theme_Keyword: geospatial datasets Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Theme_Keyword: paleoliquefaction Theme_Keyword: earthquake Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Place_Keyword: Wabash Valley Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: National Geologic Map Database Catalog themes, augmented Theme_Keyword: 1500 - Hazards Theme_Keyword: 1501 - Earthquakes Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: ISO 19115 Topic Categories Theme_Keyword: geoscientificInformation Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: Augmented FIPS 10-4 and FIPS 6-4 Place_Keyword: f17121 = Marion Place_Keyword: f17025 = Clay Place_Keyword: f17159 = Richland Place_Keyword: f17101 = Lawrence Place_Keyword: f17185 = Wabash Place_Keyword: f17047 = Edwards Place_Keyword: f17191 = Wayne Place_Keyword: f17081 = Jefferson Place_Keyword: f17055 = Franklin Place_Keyword: f17065 = Hamilton Place_Keyword: f17193 = White Place_Keyword: f17059 = Gallatin Place_Keyword: f17165 = Saline Place_Keyword: f17199 = Williamson Place_Keyword: f17087 = Johnson Place_Keyword: f17151 = Pope Place_Keyword: f17069 = Hardin Place_Keyword: f17127 = Massac Place_Keyword: f17153 = Pulaski Place_Keyword: f21007 = Ballard Place_Keyword: f21145 = McCracken Place_Keyword: f21039 = Carlisle Place_Keyword: f21105 = Hickman Place_Keyword: f21075 = Fulton Place_Keyword: f21083 = Graves Place_Keyword: f21035 = Calloway Place_Keyword: f21157 = Marshall Place_Keyword: f21139 = Livingston Place_Keyword: f21055 = Crittenden Place_Keyword: f21143 = Lyon Place_Keyword: f21033 = Caldwell Place_Keyword: f21221 = Trigg Place_Keyword: f21047 = Christian Place_Keyword: f21219 = Todd Place_Keyword: f21177 = Muhlenberg Place_Keyword: f21107 = Hopkins Place_Keyword: f21233 = Webster Place_Keyword: f21225 = Union Place_Keyword: f21101 = Henderson Place_Keyword: f21059 = Daviess Place_Keyword: f21149 = McLean Place_Keyword: f21183 = Ohio Place_Keyword: f21141 = Logan Place_Keyword: f47161 = Stewart Place_Keyword: f47125 = Montgomery Place_Keyword: f47147 = Robertson Place_Keyword: f18129 = Posey Place_Keyword: f18163 = Vanderburgh Place_Keyword: f18173 = Warrick Place_Keyword: f18147 = Spencer Place_Keyword: f18037 = Dubois Place_Keyword: f18125 = Pike Place_Keyword: f18051 = Gibson Place_Keyword: f18083 = Knox Place_Keyword: f18027 = Daviess Access_Constraints: none Use_Constraints: none Point_of_Contact: Contact_Information: Contact_Person_Primary: Contact_Person: Susan Rhea Contact_Organization: US Geological Survey Contact_Position: Geophysicist Contact_Address: Address_Type: mailing address Address: MS966, Box 25046, Federal Center City: Denver State_or_Province: CO Postal_Code: 80225 Country: USA Contact_Voice_Telephone: 303-273-8639 Contact_Facsimile_Telephone: 303-273-8600 Contact_Electronic_Mail_Address: rhea@usgs.gov Contact_Instructions: email is the best way to make contact Data_Set_Credit: Rhea Native_Data_Set_Environment: SunOS, 5.5.1, sun4u UNIX, ARC/INFO version 7.1.1 Cross_Reference: Citation_Information: Originator: Rhea, Susan, and Wheeler, R.L. Both sets of input were combined into an arcinfo coverage. Arcs were BUFFERed to create areas out of line segments so that areas of search could be color shaded on final map.
