This database of the Rifle 7.5 minute quadrangle, Garfield county, Colorado originally released as U.S Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-52, has been updated to include a digitized database. This geologic map was prepared as part of a study of digital methods and techniques as applied to complex geologic maps.

USGS OFR 97-852 is a revision of USGS OFR 95-52, but the revised map was produced using GSMCAD and is available only in PDF format, thus cannot be used in a general GIS.

This geologic map was prepared as part of a study of digital methods and techniques as applied to complex geologic maps. The geologic map was scanned from the original greenline sheets used to prepare the published Open-File map of the Rifle quadrangle (Shroba and others, 1995). Consequently, the digital version is at 1:24,000 scale using the Polyconic map projection parameters of the topographic base map. Stable base contact prints of the greenline sheets were scanned on an Ana Tech Eagle 408ET scanner to produce a .tif file. These files were then transferred to a Sun SPARCstation 20 computer where they were converted into ARC/INFO format. Each vector and polygon was given attributes derived from the original 1993 geologic map using ALACARTE (Wentworth and Fitzgibbon, 1991) software.
