The plateau drops abruptly along northwest-trending structures toward the northeast 800 m to the Redlands area and the Colorado River in Grand Valley. In addition to common alluvial and colluvial deposits, surficial deposits include Holocene and late Pleistocene charcoal-bearing valley-fill deposits, late to middle Pleistocene river-gravel terrace deposits, Holocene to middle Pleistocene younger, intermediate, and old fan-alluvium deposits, late to middle Pleistocene local gravel deposits, Holocene to late Pleistocene rock-fall deposits, Holocene to middle Pleistocene young and old landslide deposits, Holocene to late Pleistocene sheetwash deposits and eolian deposits, and Holocene Cienga-type deposits. Only the lowest part of the Upper Cretaceous Mancos Shale is exposed in the map area near the Colorado River. The Upper and Lower? Cretaceous Dakota Formation and the Lower Cretaceous Burro Canyon Formation form resistant dipslopes in the Grand Valley and a prominent ridge on the plateau. Less resistant strata of the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation consisting of the Brushy Basin, Salt Wash, and Tidwell Members form slopes on the plateau and low areas below the mountain front of the plateau. The Middle Jurassic Wanakah Formation nomenclature replaces the previously used Summerville Formation. Because an upper part of the Middle Jurassic Entrada Formation is not obviously correlated with strata found elsewhere, it is therefore not formally named; however, the lower rounded cliff former Slickrock Member is clearly present. The Lower Jurassic silica-cemented Kayenta Formation forms the cap rock for the Lower Jurassic carbonate-cemented Wingate Sandstone, which forms the impressive cliffs of the monument. The Upper Triassic Chinle Formation was deposited on the eroded and weathered Middle Proterozoic meta-igneous gneiss, pegmatite dikes, and migmatitic gneiss. Structurally the area is deceptively challenging. Nearly flat-lying strata on the plateau are folded by northwest-trending fault-propagation folds into at least two S-shaped folds along the mountain front of the plateau. Strata under Grand Valley dip at about 6 degrees to the northeast. In the absence of local evidence, the uplifted plateau is attributed to Laramide deformation by dated analogous structures elsewhere in the Colorado Plateau. The major exposed fault records high-angle reverse relationships in the basement rocks but dissipates strain as a triangular zone of distributed microfractures and cataclastic flow into overlying Mesozoic strata that absorb the fault strain, leaving only folds. Evidence for younger, probably late Pliocene or early Pleistocene, uplift does exist at the antecedent Unaweep Canyon south and east of the map area. To what degree this younger deformation affected the map area is unknown. Several geologic hazards affect the area. Middle and late Pleistocene landslides involving the smectite-bearing Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation are extensive on the plateau and common in the Redlands below the plateau. Expansive clay in the Brushy Basin and other strata create foundation stability problems for roads and homes. Flash floods create a serious hazard to people on foot in narrow canyons in the monument and to homes close to water courses downstream from narrow restrictions close to the monument boundary. Purpose: To update the interpretation and increase the scale of geologic mapping, provide a geologic map for the public to use at Colorado National Monument, and to provide sufficient geologic information for land-use and land-management decisions. In particular, the friendly support of the Superintendent Steve Hickman and his staff of park rangers made normally difficult tasks much easier. Pat Perrotti, Resource Manager for the Monument, went out of his way to fill us in on current geologic events at the Monument. Bill Rodgers, Protection Ranger, spent a day in the field with us to locate critical boundaries in the new southern addition to the Monument. Bruce Heise, National Park Service Geologic Resources Division liaison to the USGS, helped make the map a high-priority product. Joe Gregson, also with the Geologic Resources Division, obtained and transferred digital line graph (DLG) data critical for a legible topographic base for the map. The partnership with both the Colorado National Monument Association and the National Park Service has been instrumental in creation of this product for the public. In the USGS Earth Surface Processes Team, Paco Van Sistine provided prompt and critical GIS help. The constructive reviews by Bruce Bryant and Jim Yount of the USGS significantly improved the quality of the map and text. Discussions with Robert Young of Grand Junction were valuable and invigorating. The radiometric dating by Mick Kunk and Dan Unruh of the USGS provided critical constraints on the ages of Proterozoic events. The Carbon-14 dates supplied by Jack McGeehin of the USGS not only gave us the timing for geologic events during the late Quaternary, but also allowed us to date the minimum period of Native American habitation in the canyons of Colorado National Monument. Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Data were entered and checked by the geologist that made the field observations. The attributes of this geospatial data set consist of text identifiers and numeric codes that indicate the identity of the geologic unit or type of geologic feature, and determine how each feature is colored or symbolized. To check attribute accuracy, a color check plot was visually compared to the geologist's original compilation. Discrepancies between the digital geospatial dataset and the original analog compilation were corrected as needed. Machine-created listings of unique attribute values were used to identify spelling errors or other inconsistencies, and corrections were made as needed. This map has been thoroughly reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature. Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon closure, and other errors by the author and by the GIS technician(s) that created the digital database. Automated (ArcInfo) routines were also used to check the databases for polygon label errors, line or point attribution errors, sliver polygons, dangling arcs, intersection errors, and projection information. Check plots of the map were reviewed by at least two other geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. Completeness_Report: Data are complete: no features that could be accurately represented at the compilation scale of 1:24,000 were eliminated or generalized. The smallest area represented is approximately 110 square meters. All geospatial database elements are attributed. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Lines were primarily mapped by photo-interpretation of 1:24,000-scale color aerial photographs using a PG-2 photogrammetric plotter that rectified the position and transferred it to a basemap. Lines were digitized from the basemap using a digitizer tablet with resolution of 0.001 inch, and most digitized positions on the map are estimated to have at least 10 m horizontal accuracy. Elevation data that are included in the database are from digital line graph data from 1:24,000-scale 7.5' quadrangles.
