Description:
Abstract:
The Ennis 1:100,000 quadrangle lies within both the Laramide (Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary) foreland province of southwestern Montana and the northeastern margin of the middle to late Tertiary Basin and Range province.
The oldest rocks in the quadrangle are Archean high-grade gneiss, and granitic to ultramafic intrusive rocks that are as old as about 3.0 Ga. The gneiss includes a supracrustal assemblage of quartz-feldspar gneiss, amphibolite, quartzite, and biotite schist and gneiss. The basement rocks are overlain by a platform sequence of sedimentary rocks as old as Cambrian Flathead Quartzite and as young as Upper Cretaceous Livingston Group sandstones, shales, and volcanic rocks.
The Archean crystalline rocks crop out in the cores of large basement uplifts, most notably the "Madison-Gravelly arch" that includes parts of the present Tobacco Root Mountains and the Gravelly, Madison, and Gallatin Ranges. These basement uplifts or blocks were thrust westward during the Laramide orogeny over rocks as young as Upper Cretaceous. The thrusts are now exposed in the quadrangle along the western flanks of the Gravelly and Madison Ranges (the Greenhorn thrust and the Hilgard fault system, respectively). Simultaneous with the west-directed thrusting, northwest-striking, northeast-side-up reverse faults formed a parallel set across southwestern Montana; the largest of these is the Spanish Peaks fault, which cuts prominently across the Ennis quadrangle.
Beginning in late Eocene time, extensive volcanism of the Absorka Volcanic Supergroup covered large parts of the area; large remnants of the volcanic field remain in the eastern part of the quadrangle. The volcanism was concurrent with, and followed by, middle Tertiary extension. During this time, the axial zone of the "Madison-Gravelly arch," a large Laramide uplift, collapsed, forming the Madison Valley, structurally a complex down-to-the-east half graben. Basin deposits as thick as 4,500 m filled the graben.
Pleistocene glaciers sculpted the high peaks of the mountain ranges and formed the present rugged topography.
Purpose: This map forms part of the Montana State Geological Map.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Data were entered and checked by the geologist who made the observations. The attributes of this geospatial data set consist of text identifiers and numeric codes that indicate the identity of the geologic unit or type of geologic feature, and determine how each feature is colored or symbolized. To check attribute accuracy, a color check plot was visually compared to the geologist's original compilation. Discrepancies between the digital geospatial dataset and the original analog compilation were corrected as needed. Machine-created listings of unique attribute values were used to identify spelling errors or other inconsistencies, and corrections were made as needed. This map was been thoroughly reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Map elements were visually checked by the author for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon attributes, and other errors. Automated (ARC/INFO) routines were also used to check the databases for polygon label errors, line or point attribution errors, sliver polygons, dangling arcs, intersection errors, and projection information. The map was reviewed by one other geologist for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards.
Completeness_Report:
Data are complete; no features were eliminated or generalized. There is no cross section and the ARC/INFO database lacks a unit properties table, although unit properties are described in the text explanation. A scanned base map is included.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Lines were primarily positioned by interpretation of published preexisting geological mapping, thesis maps, and unpublished geological mapping. Lines were scanned from the basemap. The scanned lines were vectorized with the CADCORE program. Additional lines and point observations were added using a digitizer tablet with resolution of 0.001 inch. Most positions on the map are estimated to be accurate closer than 30 m horizontally.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The scanned lines were edited in DESIGN-CAD and brought into ARC/ INFO with the DXFARC command. Two coverages were initially created, one containing polygons, the other containing all other features (labels, fold axes, decorations, etc.).

Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The dataset may be downloaded in either ARC/INFO export format (.e00 files) or
ARCView shapefile format. A printable PDF version of the map is also available.
The dataset consists of four coverages (ENNISGEO, ENNISFLT, ENNISSYM, and
ENNISATT) and a .tiff file containing the scanned USGS topographic basemap. The
coverages containing both arc and polygon or point entities, ENNISGEO/ENNISATT,
have been divided into two separate sets of files in the ARCView shapefile
format named ENNISGLN/ENNISALN and ENNISGPT/ENNISAPT for the line and point
entities respectively. All coverages contain the standard ARC/INFO items in
addition to the items defined in more detail below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENNISGEO: Polygon coverage containing all contacts and known or approximated
fault lines along with unit label points.
