Description:
Abstract:
The paper version of The geology of the Challis 1°x2° quadrangle, was compiled by Fred Fisher, Dave McIntyre and Kate Johnson in 1992. The geology was compiled on a 1:250,000 scale topographic base map. TechniGraphic System, Inc. of Fort Collins Colorado digitized this map under contract for N.Shock. G.Green edited and prepared the Challis digital version for publication as a geographic information system database. The digital geologic map database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps.
Purpose:
This dataset was developed to provide a geologic map GIS database of Challis 1°x2° Quadrangle, Idaho for use in spatial analysis.

Fred Fisher, Dave McIntyre and Kate Johnson (all USGS) compiled the geology onto stable-base material at a 1:250,000. That version was published as USGS publication MAP I-1819. TechniGraphic System, Inc. of Fort Collins Colorado digitized that map for the USGS in 1999 under contract for N.Shock (USGS). G.Green (USGS) edited and prepared for digital release the Challis digital version as a geographic information system database. The digital geologic map database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps. The files are stored in the following projection - UTM, meters, zone 11, NAD27, Clarke 1866.

Fred Fisher, Dave McIntyre and Kate Johnson compiled the geology of the Challis 1x2 quadrangle and published it in 1992. Some of the geologists who have worked on the Challis 1x2 quadrangle included Ben Leonard, Bart Ekren, Dick Hardyman, Betty Skipp, Paul Simms, Thor Kiilsgaard and Reed Lewis. Published and unpublished sources for the compilation are included in the paper text. Nancy Shock was responsible for creating the digital product. Gregory N. Green did the final assembly for digital publication.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Clear film positives of the 1:250,000-scale geologic map compilation were electronically scanned to create raster images, converted to vector, polygon, and point GIS layers, and attributed by the contractor Techni Graphics Systems, Inc. of Fort Collins Colorado. At the USGS these files were further attributed, edited, and compared to the original film positives to check for digitizing and attributing errors. Corrections were made as needed.
