USGS Series Names

Over the years USGS has produced numerous serial publications. The naming of publications within these series has not been completely uniform or consistent. The series names given here, which were provided by the USGS library, may be used as an authority list in those applications for which consistency in series names is needed. Names in italics are informal groups used by USGS staff but not written into the publication.

Note that most of these names may be prefixed with "USGS" or "U.S. Geological Survey" as other organizations may publish series using the same names, and it may be useful to distinguish them. Common abbreviations are given as well; these are often used with the number of the publication in the series to form a unique issue identification. However not all series are numbered, some abbreviations are used for more than one series name, and for some series more than one abbreviation has been used.
