Description:

Abstract:

This ArcView shapefile contains a polygon representation of the Missouri River and Lake Sakakawea, located within the Williston Basin. This theme was created specifically for the National Coal Resources Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.

Purpose:

The Nation's coal resources are being assessed by the USGS. This assessment identifies and characterizes the coal beds and coal zones that will provide the bulk of the Nation's coal-derived energy during the next few decades. This assessment is different from previous USGS assessments because digital files and databases are being collected and stored in standardized formats,and being analyzed using a Geographic Information System (GIS).

This data was specifically created for The Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region ArcView Project. Its sole purpose is for graphical representation, and should not be used for analysis. Any concerns question, or comments regarding this data should be direct to The USGS Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS) Data Center.

Process_Description:

The North Dakota DLG hydrology file Spatial Data transfer Standard (SDTS) was downloaded, unzipped and untared. It was then imported using the sdts import command in ARC/INFO. The new coverage was then edited to show Lake Sakakawea and the Missouri River. The coverage was then projected to geographic, and converted to a shapefile in ArcView.
