The study involved combining compilation of previous published and unpublished work in the area with new mapping completed in the first half of 1997. The study area makes up a transect of the central California Coast Ranges, starting just east of the San Andreas fault and continuing east across the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Santa Clara Valley, and into the heart of the Diablo Range. The area includes five fault-bounded structural blocks, each containing a distinct stratigraphic assemblage, and the Santa Clara Valley which contains a large Quaternary alluvial complex overlying and obscuring bedrock relationships. Several active faults, including the Sargent, Castro, and Calaveras faults, as well as others with an unknown amount of recent activity, including the Carnadero, San Jose, and Madrone Springs faults, cut the study area with a general north-northwest trend. Purpose: To provide a digital database of the southernmost part of Santa Clara County, California to the public. I am also grateful to Dave Jones, Earl Brabb, Robert McLaughlin, and Carl Wentworth who offered helpful advice and information both in the field and office, as well as Dave Wagner of Calif. Div. Mines and Geology for unpublished data on Three Sisters quadrangle and advice in the field. Native_Data_Set_Environment: ARC/INFO version 7.0.4 Data_Quality_Information: Logical_Consistency_Report: This digital map database, compiled from previously published and unpublished data, and new mapping by the author, represents the general distribution of bedrock and surficial deposits in southernmost Santa Clara County. Completeness_Report: Complete. This map is intended to be of general use to engineers and land-use planners. However, its small scale does not provide sufficient detail for site development purposes. In addition, this map does not take the place of fault-rupture hazard zones designated by the California State Geologist (Hart, 1988). Similarly, the database cannot be used to identify or delineate landslides in the region. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: The geologic map information was digitized from stable originals of the geologic maps at 1:24,000 scale. The author manuscripts (pencil on mylar) were scanned using a Altek monochrome scanner with a resolution of 800 dots per inch. The scanned images were vectorized and transformed from scanner coordinates to projection coordinates with digital tics placed by hand at quadrangle corners. The scanned lines were edited interactively by hand using ALACARTE, color boundaries were tagged as appropriate, and scanning artifacts visible at 1:24,000 were removed. Base Map layers were prepared from scale-stable printing negatives of the U.S. Geological Survey Monterey (1983 edition) 1:100,000 topographic map, which has a 50 meter contour interval. Scanned and vectorized images were transformed from scanner coordinates to projection coordinates with digital tics placed by hand at map corners. The images were then trimmed interactively by hand using ALACARTE to conform to the area of the geologic coverages.
