Abstract:
Lines in this cover show where gravity oe aeromagnetic data have been modelled to constrain subsurface structure. Gravity and magnetic signatures result from deep structure, such as might be at hypocentral depths of earthquakes. We show only the lines for which interpretations or models are publically available. In gravmag_all, extent of the lines outside the study boundary is retained; in gravmag the lines have been clipped to the study boundary.

The data was generated to help in understanding the seismotectonic hazards in the vicinity of the lower Wabash Valley. This data complements similar data collected in the vicinity of New Madrid, MO US Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-0574, available at http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0574/

    Date: 05-Aug-1996 (process 1 of 2)
    Lines, except Hildenbrand's, were digitized from reports into arcinfo covers. Decimal degree coordinates for Hildenbrand's lines were sent via email and converted to arcinfo. Lines were labeled for reference on the paper map, and annotation was added. For gravmag, the data was clipped to the project boundary.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
    Many of the lines are portrayed on small-scale figures in reports. We attempted to generate digital coordinates of the lines from these reports, but the accuracy of location is poor.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
    Since our study focused on large structures that might penetrate to hypocentral depths, we excluded shallow geophysical surveys aimed at solving surficial problems (engineering, landfill, or mining problems.) We show only lines for which interpretations have been or will soon be published, including lines from theses and dissertations. We ignore most proprietary lines.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
    Chain-node topology present.
