Abstract:
These data sets include deposit description, location, and geochemistry of sedimentary rock-hosted (Carlin-type) Au deposits in P.R. China. Deposit data was compiled by U.S. Geological Survey and Tianjim Geological Academy into a series of tables (.xls and .csv) provided in Open-File Report 02-131, Appendix III and IV. Since the 1980s, Chinese geologists have devoted a large-scale exploration and research effort to the deposits. As a result, there are more than 20 million oz of proven Au reserves in sedimentary rock-hosted Au deposits in P.R. China. Additional estimated and inferred resources are present in over 160 deposits and occurrences, which are undergoing exploration. This makes China second to Nevada in contained ounces of Au in Carlin-type deposits. It is likely that many of the Carlin-type Au ore districts in China, when fully developed, could have resource potential comparable to the multi-1,000-tonne Au resource in northern Nevada.
Purpose:
The data was prepared in cooperation with the Tianjin Geological Academy to increase the knowledge base of Chinese gold deposits for research, development and for spatial analysis.
Supplemental_Information:
The tables represent a series of worksheets that evolved as data was collected. Initial data came from a few China deposit records in the U.S. Geological Survey's Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS). Some field name inconsistencies occur in the worksheets that are remnants from the earlier MRDS field names. For example, the MRDS field STATE NAME in one of the tables is equivalent to the field name PROVINCE in other tables. Some tables represent earlier stages of the data gathering process as reflected by the lesser amount or duplication of data. Only two of the deposit description tables have coordinate information. The fields DEPOSIT NAME or DEPOSIT could be used to link coordinate data to other tables such as the deposit geochemistry.

Several modifications and additions were made to the Access Database as follows: (1) Tables were updated with more accurate latitude and longitude locations and new occurrences were added for the sedimentary rock-hosted gold deposits under the "GEOGRAPHY" section. The original number of 114 occurrences in version 1.1 of Open-File Report 98-466 is now 165 occurrences in this version 1.2 and the more accurate locations are now useful for spatial analysis. (2) New Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) photographs of polished sections from gold ores were added under the "MAPS & PHOTOS" section. A link to these SEM photographs also was added under "MINERALOGY" (found under "GEOLOGY"). (3) Geochemistry tables were added for gold ore specimens collected in 1997 (Hebei, Guizhou and Gangzi Provinces) and in 1999 (Shanzi, Sichuan, and Yunnan Provinces) under the "GEOLOGY & GEOCHEMISTRY" section. Other miscellaneuos editorial adjustments have also been made in version1.2.
