Paper copies of the four geologic map sheets and the explanation were scanned, and the geologic map sheets were georeferenced to the Montana State Plane South coordinate system. Purpose: This set of images was developed to provide georeferenced digital images of the 1:12000-scale geologic map (Page and Nokleberg, 1974) These images can be used in conjunction with the vector data files now available as part of the I-797 dataset. This database is not meant to be used or displayed at any scale larger than 1:12000 (for example, 1:2000). Supplemental_Information: Each georeferenced MrSID image consists of a package of three files with the extensions: sid, .sdw (MrSID world file), and .aux (ArcInfo 8.1 georeferencing information). The MrSID and TIFF files are listed below: i797origs1.sid/.sdw/.aux - Sheet 1 - east end of the Stillwater Complex i797origs2.sid/.sdw/.aux - Sheet 2 - east central part of the Stillwater Complex i797origs3.sid/.sdw/.aux - Sheet 3 - west central part of the Stillwater Complex i797origs4.sid/.sdw/.aux - Sheet 4 - west end of the Stillwater Complex i797origs5.tif - Sheet 5 - explanation of map symbols, correlation of map units and map unit descriptions used on Sheets 1 through 4. Miller scanned printed paper copies of the map sheets (Page and Nokleberg, 1974) and then georeferenced them to the Montana State Plane South coordinate system to create GeoTIFF files for the geologic map sheets. The GeoTIFF files were then compressed into MrSID images. Native_Data_Set_Environment: Microsoft Windows 2000 Version 5.0 (Build 2195) Service Pack 2; ESRI ArcCatalog 8.1.0.642 Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: The images were compared visually with hard copy printed sheets to assure that features were legible. Completeness_Report: The five sheets comprising the printed (1974) version of Map I-797 have been scanned and are presented in their entirety at a scale of 1:12000. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The images were georeferenced after establishing a series of links. A link is defined by 1) selecting an intersection of easting and northing lines shown on the basemap of the image, 2) linking that point with a calculated position (Montana State Plane South coordinate system. The horizontal positional accuracy for the four registered images is as follows: Sheet 1: root mean square (RMS) error = 6.8 ft using 22 links, Sheet 2: root mean square (RMS) error = 16.9 ft using 32 links, Sheet 3: root mean square (RMS) error = 8.2 ft using 17 links, Sheet 4: root mean square (RMS) error = 5.8 ft using 24 links. The relatively large error in registering sheet 2 may be due to in part to a splice in the basemap used for this sheet. The splice has a NNE trend and occurs near the center of the sheet. The Ideal scanner is capable of scanning at 400 dpi native resolution without utilizing interpolation. The scans were made as index color TIFF files allowing 256 colors. The images converted to a compressed TIFF format using ArcInfo 8.1, then registered using ArcMAP 8.1. The GeoTIFF files were further compressed into MrSID file format.
