Description:
Abstract:
The geology of the Salmon National Forest, Idaho, was compiled from published and unpublished sources and new field mapping by Evans, Lund, Tysdal, and Winkler between 1997 and 2001. The geology was compiled onto 1:100,000-scale topographic base maps for input into a geographic information system (GIS). The digital geologic map database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps.
Purpose:
This dataset was developed to provide a geologic map GIS database of Salmon National Forest, Idaho, for use in spatial analysis by a variety of users.

Karl V. Evans (USGS) compiled the geology onto scale-stable base materials At a scale of 1:100,000. Geologic Data Systems,Inc. (GDS), scanned the geologic map and provided attributed Arc/Info .e00 files to the USGS in decimal degree format. Gregory N. Green imported the files, transformed them to UTM zone 11 or zone 12 and Albers Conic Equal Area projections, and checked for errors. The files are stored in Albers Conic Equal Area projection for ease of use across the UTM zone.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
The geologic map comprises recent published and unpublished mapping, primarily by members of the USGS; older maps were used only where recent coverage was lacking. Since the mid-1980 s, several research projects of the USGS yielded new maps for large areas of the Salmon National Forest. Not all questions of map relations could be adequately resolved with existing data, so careful users of the map will note a few areas of apparent geologic and geometric problems. This is particularly true for the northwestern part of the Beaverhead Mountains and the northeastern part of the Clearwater Mountains. Almost no field work was undertaken in these areas and satisfactory reconciliation of previous, differing map interpretations was not readily accomplished. Some interpretation in the westernmost part of the western map sheet is speculative.

Process_Description:
Karl V. Evans compiled the geology of the Salmon National Forest, Idaho, from 1997 to 1998. Karl Evans, Karen Lund, Russ Tysdal, and Gary Winkler undertook field mapping to resolve problems in geologically complex areas. Older sources for the compilation are listed in the bibliography of the accompanying text, and an index map showing the extent of the older source maps is shown on sheet 2. Gregory N. Green was responsible for creating the digital database.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Clear-film positives of the 1:100,000-scale geologic map compilation were electronically scanned to create raster images, converted to vector, polygon, and point GIS layers, and attributed by a contractor (Geologic Data Systems, Inc., Denver, CO). These digital files were then augmented with an interim geologic map data model. The initial products were remitted to the USGS in Arc/Info EXPORT format as latitude and longitude. At the USGS these files were projected and further attributed, edited, and compared to the original film positives to check for digitizing and attributing errors. Corrections were made as needed.
